Discover Ontario cycling at its best. This scenic cycling route includes Port Hope and the Ganaraska River and ends with the Waterfront Trail along Lake Ontario. (30 km)
Begin your Northumberland cycling journey in charming Port Hope. Grab a fresh juice and fuel up, then head north to take in Ganaraska River views.
Visit the Ganaraska Fish Ladder. In the spring, you can see thousands of spawning rainbow trout. In fall you'll see a black carpet of salmon. See the live fish-volume activity chart on our Ganaraska River fishing page so you're sure to visit at prime time.
If you want to take a little cycling detour, (County Road 74 and a little bit south on County Road 28), park your bike at Primitive Designs. In this huge warehouse you can discover crafty finds from all over the world. Make sure you take your picture beside the gigantic animals and robots made of recycled parts.
Arriving at the Ganaraska River, stop at Sylvan Glen Conservation area for a picnic and a short hike westbound along the bank of the river.
In Canton, see one of the oldest churches in the area built in 1876.
Round out the rest of your trip taking this cycling trail through farm fields, past heritage buildings and rambling country estates.
Some of the most stunning road cycling views of Lake Ontario are along Bests Road (7% grade!), as well as the Waterfront Trail (a leg of the Glorious Ganaraska loop) that runs along Lake Ontario.
Looking for a relaxed tourism cycling stay? Try Woodland Garden's BB north on Highway 10, Moonlight and Pines B&B on the edge of the Ganaraska Forest, or book into Peace Country Retreat which is en route. There's even a Port Hope resident located near this route that's registered on WarmShowers, referenced in our Google Map below.
Want a first-hand perspective of this route? Check out our blog post by Petra Hartwig. She writes about taking this 30km looped route counter clockwise starting from the shores of Lake Ontario.
