A Scenic Ride Through the Hills
The Greenbelt Route was opened in 2016 and it's made for cycling Ontario back roads. Take your time winding your way through the hills of Northumberland County over a 102 km route.
Fun Facts
- The Northumberland Classic Road Race used 10km of the Greenbelt's challenging grades in 2018 as part of their Ontario Cup Road Race series of events.
- The Northumberland section of the route features a fully-signed string of quiet back roads and bike trails as part of the 480-km cycling route crossing 7 regions in Ontario from Northumberland to Niagara.
- An important Canada road bike route, the Greenbelt Route will connect you to the unforgettable tastes and stunning beauty of our protected countryside.
- One-quarter of the Greenbelt cycling trail winds through Northumberland County, following parts of the Glorious Ganaraska route, Waterfront Trail Ontario, and the Rice Lake Ramble route.
- You'll ride along historic streets in Cobourg and Port Hope where you can enjoy the friendly communities, grab a bite to eat or take a break at the beach.
- The route will lead you through acres of rolling pastures and the wooded bike trails of the Oak Ridges Moraine.
- Explore Roseneath and Alderville (the eastern terminus of the Greenbelt Route) just east of Rice Lake.
- Take in sweeping views as you travel uphill along the Oak Ridges Moraine around the northernmost point on the Greenbelt Route - Alderville First Nation.

From Rail to Trail - Try VIA Rail bicycle service and take a train ride to Cobourg. You can pick up the mid-point of the Greenbelt Route from the train station, or cycle the Glorious Ganaraska or Rice Lake Ramble routes, or the shorter Cobourg waterfront trail.
