Celebrate a national trail, "The Great Trail", where you can cycle Canada from the Pacific coast to the Atlantic coast to the coast of the Beaufort Sea. This relaxed rail trail offers incredible views and a quiet getaway. Formerly called the Trans Canada Trail. (37 km)
You're on the longest recreational trail in the world (24,000 km). Northumberland's portion is a rail trail between Hastings and Campbellford. View the Northumberland maps at this link.
Ride alongside the Trent River, farm and wetlands - and meet a few farmers along the way. A bonus is booking a summer or fall performance at Westben, a musical theatre in a beautiful barn adjacent to the trail in Campbellford.
Eateries right on the trail: Banjo's Grill, Hastings (ice cream shop next door); Tim Horton's, Campbellford; Chubby's Restaurant (home-made food), Hoard's Station (east of Campbellford on Hoards River).
Cycle the section that leads to the thrilling Ranney Gorge Suspension Bridge (closed indefinitely starting July 2020) so you can cycle high above the water below. The bridge links to Ferris Provincial Park in Campbellford.
This relaxed bike route is perfect for those who prefer a scenic, flat ride on a mountain bike or hybrid.
Experience this trail as Ontario By Bike did with a group ride in June 2019 for their Trent Severn Trail Tour. They journeyed from the suspension bridge westbound to Hastings and beyond. Here's what they had to say about it in their recent blog.
