Within Cramahe, Colborne is a village sprinkled with vintage architecture and boasting the widest main street in Northumberland. Colourful murals grace the exterior walls of downtown buildings. Victoria Square, an attractive park gracing the centre of town, has a cannon and a gazebo under large shade trees. Take a walk through Colborne's history with their walking tour.
Don't forget to visit the Colborne Art Gallery, housed in a refurbished 19th century registry office, where you'll see the works of a variety of local artists.
Another unique artistic shop not to be missed and just north of the village is Hoselton Sculptures, crafting handmade aluminium sculptures.
Just east of the village, be sure to visit Old Mill Alpacas and browse their retail store full of alpaca wool mitts, scarves and more. They offer Alpaca Treks and Farm Tours, where you can get up close and personal with alpacas, feeding them prepared apple treats.
Apples are big business in the Colborne area. Enjoy the fall harvest with a drive down Highway 2, signed as The Apple Route (as plotted on our Great Fall Drive Google map). Drop by one of the area's many apple producers, including Pieter's Appleyard.
Northumberland is home to the world's biggest apple structure featured at the Big Apple and Restaurant on Highway 401. Enter the apple for a self-guided, interpretive "apple growing" tour and a view at the top of the 30' structure. A mini-zoo with donkeys, llamas and goats will entertain the kids. Take a ride on a mini-train or try your hand at mini-putt. Head into the restaurant and watch fruit pies being made. You can buy candy apples, cookies, apple bread, apple cider beer, and of course, our very favourite apple/almond cheesecake to take home. At the take out counter, place your order for thin-crust pizza, burgers, sandwiches, and panini's big enough for two.
