Trails for Hiking & Cycling

Discover a place where you can stretch your legs and expand your horizons. Northumberland County has over 20 hiking trails through nature.

Avid cyclists can enjoy challenging cycling routes, or there's an easier rail trail that spans the nation (The Great Trail). Our two huge forests, Northumberland County Forest north of Cobourg and Ganaraska Forest north of Port Hope, allow for hiking, cycling and adventure-seeking.

Birdwatching is a popular activity in Northumberland. Presqu'ile Provincial Park has recorded over 300 species on their property. Our trails and forests are a great place to birdwatch as well.

Adventure on the Water

Our Outdoor Adventure Map Guide has a chart outlining 15 boat launches and marinas so you can begin to enjoy our water trails. Canoe and kayaking enthusiasts love to explore the Trent-Severn Waterway and enjoy the thrill of paddling through the locks. Check out our paddling itineraries where you have a choice of going through the lock system, or launching at the top or bottom of the locks. One itinerary even celebrates Samuel de Champlain coming through Northumberland in 1615.

Northumberland is one of Ontario's finest fishing destinations. With Northumberland surrounded by the waters of the Ganaraska River, Lake Ontario, and the Trent-Severn Waterway, there's no end to what you can catch at your doorstep.

Sandy beaches are prevalent on the north shore of Lake Ontario in Port Hope, Cobourg, Colborne and Brighton (Presqu'ile Provincial Park), with a few smaller sandy beaches scattered on the south shores of Rice Lake. Visit the Cool Fun in the Hot Sun blog post for more information.

Zip Through the Trees

Looking for a fun challenge for the family? Visit Treetop Trekking in the Ganaraska Forest to climb trees and then zip from one to the other, with the wind in your hair. It's an exciting experience! If you have kids that are at least 9 years old and 55" tall, you can take on the adventure as a family.

Tee Time

Northumberland is home to 11 great golf courses with amazing views. Find some friends to make a foursome and pick one of our courses to enjoy. Even better, make a weekend of it and visit two courses!
