Northumberland County’s restaurants, cafés and specialty food shops serve local ingredients. We’ve picked just a few handfuls of choices for you – either because we’ve been dazzled by how fresh-forward they are, or they offer some incredible comfort food that’s also good for the foodie soul.

Beyond wonderful coffee or chai tea, at Lola’s you can order up incredible sandwiches on expertly baked bread. Satisfying fillings can include juicy pulled pork. Lola’s is a very friendly stop on any outing and gets great reviews. The cinnamon buns are a great comfort-food touch.

As the name might hint, you can count on this location for some of the best local apples around. Pick your own or pre-picked are both options. Other offerings can include peaches and pears, plus fresh-pressed apple cider later in September. Open for the season August 29th, call to confirm.

Stop into Cobourg’s downtown community market. Owners Lucas and Montana are passionate about supporting local growers and are often on hand to share great food tips. The Market & Smor is a zero food-waste market. Ordering online for pick up is easy, or you can check the website for current walk-in hours. All items look as good as they taste, and provide a fresh spin on to-go foods and specialty items. You can even grab a fresh, vegan smoothie and, once in a while, something off the secret menu on the back deck.

The Behan family is making sure they offer the highest quality in locally-grown produce. You can find apples, pears and other fruits in season. The fresh-pressed apple cider is great. Or, you may want to take home some apple cider vinegar to add a little extra something to a salad dressing.

Locally grown hops make great locally crafted beer. That's the philosophy of owner Rick Bailey who has teamed up with area farmers to get some great ingredients. Some of NHB's noted classics include Project 22, P.S. I Love You and Super Continental Ale. Seasonal varieties are often available.

Stop at this Cobourg area market for fresh vegetables, fruits and farm stand treats. Say Hi to Anne Burnham and ask her about her stewed rhubarb recipe. Much of the market’s produce is grown on this sixth-generation family farm. You can also pick up preserves, cheeses and other fresh-baked treats. Open from Monday-Sunday, call ahead or visit their website for current hours.

This farm market is located close by the family’s century stone farm house. Cindy Osland started a local market to offer veggies from neighbouring farms. The Osland’s naturally-raised meats are delicious, and well worth packing a cooler to bring home. Save room to try some great bakery treats.

McGillicafey’s is a perfect place to sit out on the patio and watch the boats go by on the Trent-Severn Waterway. The food is equally as good as the view. Highlights include the House Smoked Beef Brisket and the saffron-infused cocktails. They are partnered with Ontario’s only saffron farm.

Have you been to Church lately? That’s a great line from a beer maker located in a church – a former Methodist Church (c.1878). Brewmaster John Graham knows his calling. Church-Key was Northumberland County’s first craft brewery, started in 2000. Their great ales can be ordered online. Try Holy Smoke Scotch Ale and Northumberland Ale.
