5 HIKING TRAILS FOR YOUR NEXT SUNNY DAY

1. GANARASKA MILLENNIUM CONSERVATION AREA, PORT HOPE

This is the perfect length of hike for a relaxed day. Try this conservation area featuring 2 km of meandering trails with interpretive signage. Roam around the Old Molson Pond area, now a marsh with some open water areas located along the Ganaraska River. Washroom and picnic facilities are not available at this time.

2. WATERFRONT TRAIL, COBOURG

Set your own pace on one of Ontario’s most significant trails, Ontario’s Great Lakes Waterfront Trail. Park your car in the residential area at Monk’s Cove and take a walk along the bluff overlooking Lake Ontario, and onto Tremaine St. to find the entrance to Peace Park. Cross the bridge (stopping for a great photo opportunity), and then head through a quiet park area. Walk along Clyde St. until it connects to Ontario St. and then head south until you find the boardwalk, a popular spot for a casual walk. You can also veer off the boardwalk and walk along the rock beach to enjoy the cool water, and often a cool breeze. This is part of a 3000 km trail which also passes through Port Hope to the west and Colborne and Brighton to the east. The trail often follows county roads and side roads.

3. THE UNIVERSAL TRAIL, HARWOOD

The Universal Trail offers a sturdy, level surface with benches along the way for sitting. Try the Carstairs Tract, with 4 loops each branching off a common trail. The land was planted as an arboretum in 1948 and then re-planted with Red Pine, White Pine, White Spruce and European Larch in 1950. Some of the arboretum trees can still be found within the plantations. Washroom facilities are not available at this time.
