Fishing Lake Ontario
Lake Ontario is famous for its fantastic salmon fishing. Among the many species prospering in these waters, the chinook or pacific salmon top the scales, many reaching well over 30 pounds. You may also hook on to other species of salmon in the lake including, coho salmon and pink salmon. Atlantic salmon are currently being re-introduced into the lake through the Bring Back the Salmon restoration program. Due to the importance of these fish to our waterways they are catch and release only.
Each year the Great Ontario Salmon Derby. Canada's largest tournament, takes place on Lake Ontario. With Port Hope Marina serving as an official weigh in station. No boat? No problem! Charter a boat with a captain's ticket for your chance to win big and join in the fun!
Salmon share the waters of Lake Ontario with many species of trout. None are more sought after than steelhead (rainbow trout). Known for their brilliant leaps when hooked, anglers can enjoy catching these world class fish in Lake Ontario. The average Lake Ontario steelhead weighs in at 6-8 pounds, although trophy steelhead weighing over 20 pounds is not uncommon.
Other fish also call Lake Ontario and its river mouths home including brown trout, lake trout, northern pike, smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, walleye and carp.
With marina's in Brighton, Cobourg, and Port Hope and plenty of accommodations along the lake Northumberland County is an excellent spot to hook on to your next big catch!
Please remember to fish responsibly and have fun!
