Celebrate the winter season in Northumberland County at one of many festivals, events and live performances.
Something unique for December is Nuevo Norte Alpaca Farm's Christmas Open House on the 3rd. Have your picture taken with Santa and the alpacas, and buy some soft Christmas gifts. Then there's always a chance to see your favourite celebrity on stage like John McDermott or an Elvis Tribute concert. A Christmas House Tour in Port Hope will get you in the festive spirit.
In January, specially-chosen restaurants in Cobourg offer prix fixe meals during Savoury Celebrations. Or combine a buffet dinner with a show at Cobourg's Best Western as the Northumberland Players take the stage for a comedic show.
February brings Ontario's Family Day holiday weekend, and Cobourg has their Winter Festivities featuring free skating, music at the outdoor rink, and horse drawn wagon rides. Family Day weekend also brings us Ontario Family Fishing, where children and adults can experience the Canadian tradition of ice fishing, license free.
This winter is a great time to check out Port Hope not only for shopping for antiques, outfits or taking in a show at the Capitol Theatre, but for riding through town in a horse-drawn wagon for free on Saturdays in December.
Golden Beach Resort is the only resort on the south side of Rice Lake open year round and offering winter specials and events. It's located just north of the Northumberland County Forest where you can use the trails free of charge for hiking, snowshoeing or cross-country skiing.
As winter draws closer to spring Northumberland's maple trees start producing tasty maple syrup. Heralding the kids getting out of school for March break, venture out to the well-known Warkworth Maple Syrup Festival or the Maple Syrup Demo Day at the Ganaraska Forest. Learn how maple syrup is extracted from the trees and prepared for consumption while testing tasty treats.
